The Aquabats - "Awesome Forces" (fun song)

Big D and the Kid's Table - "My Girlfriend's on Drugs"

Black Flag - "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme", "TV Party"

The Bronx (appropriate) - "Heart Attack American"

Buck O Nine - "My Town"

Burden Brothers - Another great newer rock band. "Beautiful Night", "Come on Down" and "Dirty Sanchez" are just a few of their amazing tunes.

The Casualties - "Tomorrow Belongs to Us", "Fight for Your Life"

Circle Jerks - "Murder the Disturbed", "Coup D'etat"

The Deftones - "Knife Party", "Change" and "Digital Bath"

The Descendents - "Cool to Be You" and "Sad State of Affairs"

Dropkick Murphys - "Kiss Me I'm Shitfaced"

Elliott Smith - "Somebody That I Used to Know", "Angels" and "Say Yes'.

The Flatliners - "Fred's Got Slacks"

Flogging Molly - "Devil's Dance Floor"

The Fully Down - "Never Enough"

Gogol Bordello - Anything by them but "Let's Get Radical" is a favorite of mine.

Goldfinger - "King for a Day", "Mable" and "Spokesman"

Greg Graffin - "Dream of Unity"

Guttermouth - "Pee in the Shower'

Jackson 5 - "Candy Girl"

Jurassic 5 - "Concrete Schoolyard"

Less Than Jake - Awesome band I Suggest "Liquor Store"

Punk Is Alive And Well

Having just returned from an outstanding night of punk rock I have many things to say.

In chronological order as best I can remember them here we go:

First off, screw House of Blues! My ticket and their "official" website said the show would start at 9 pm sharp. I arrived at 8:57 and the band I was most eager to see "Black President" was ending their set. This is the 2nd time in 3 months I have missed their set and I am furious. 8 songs of theirs I have been able to procure and they are all outstanding and I want to see them live! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The sting was short-lived however as I was able to speak with their guitarist Charlie Paulson (Goldfinger), who is one of the great guys in the world of punk. He and I had emailed back and forth about a concert idea of mine several months back. As always has been he was a pleasure to speak to and was very encouraging about my vision. He made sure to establish that he wanted to be updated and wanted to be part of whatever I could create if it was possible. He also told me that Goldfinger heads into the studio Monday to start recording their new album....yeah!!!

So Dead Sea Dave and I got a good spot about 10 feet from the stage and waited for the next band "Hit Me Back" to arrive on the stage. At first glance it appeared to be as the great Ron Burgundy would say "Amateur Hour". After about 30 seconds I realized that it was possible that we were seeing he future of punk rock. The band plain and simple was awesome...classic punk rock with songs that lasted no more than 1:37. All about disdain for the government, society and relationships...without any emo bullshit.

Dead Sea Dave was looking for a lady friend during this set and knowing his taste I pointed out a contestant (which was made quite easier considering you had to be 21+ to hang out downstairs at the House of Blues on this evening...all the youngsters were herded upstairs...which at first I admit I enjoyed). After I pointed her out a mosh pit broke out and as luck would have it Dead Sea spilled a portion of his beer on the aforementioned young lady. Being the kind young fellow he is Dave offered to buy her and her good friend drinks between sets for his terrible indiscretion. We hung out at the bar , made small talk and waited for the main attraction for the evening "The Circle Jerks" to start their set.

Finally out comes the legendary Keith Morris (all 55 years old of him), looking great and sounding even better. This was the best I have ever heard his voice sound as he crooned over classics such as "Wasted", "Question Authority", "Murder the Disturbed" and my favorite track of the night "Wild in The Streets" which was exactly as I had remembered it. Greg Hetson (Bad Religion, Black President...probably the greatest punk rock guitarist ever) was on fire the entire night.

The entire set was great even though 2 classics "Group Sex" and "Wonderful" were left out...fun night at the concert hall nonetheless.

The major highlight of the night had to be when Keith Morris stated "Had we known all the kids would be herded up stage and not allowed downstairs we would not have played this show...this is bullshit and house of blues knows it". Almost immediately about 200 under 21'ers rushed from downstairs through the security and created the most punk-rock moment San Diego has seen in years. Luckily for the youngsters they got to mosh for 5 or 6 songs before the HOB gestapos started kicking them out. Several times Morris exclaimed "What the fuck are you doing...the kid did nothing wrong why are you kicking him out?"

And so after a wild 1 and 1/2 hour set the show was over...an outstanding night of punk that is rarely seen anymore...As Morris said near the end of their set "We can't do everything for you guys...if you see something wrong take care of it yourself."

And so ended a great night of punk...

The Second To Last Night At Landlord Jim's Ever

First off I want to thank the staff and crew at Landlord Jim's. It achieved what so few club/bars in San Diego has been able to establish since I moved here six years ago...it is comfortable for everyone.

Tonight was no different, my friend Keisha...who's main man is a regular DJ at the Underground Gem got us right in upon arrival...even though about 100 San Diegans had braved the elements (55 degrees and 5 mph winds...sack up nancy).

As is with every night I have ever spent there hanging out and listening to music it was a complete joy. Great music... wonderful mix and good people all around having fun. I arrived in my punk-rock garb and not once did I have someone look at me with a discerning eye.

And with that dies one of the last few hidden wonderful secrets of San Diego. A venue where you could have a few beers at a reasonable price, enjoy great music and the company of nice people. Now that is dead, All in the name of a parking structure!

I will carry with me many fine memories of a neighborhood establishment with no pretention, attitude or arrogance. Just a place where life would stand still for a moment and not pass you by in the moment.

And with that I bid you adieu Landlord Jim's...we will never forget you.

Just A Little Bit Of Rambling On This Thursday Night While Listening To Against Me!

I was given an electric guitar for Christmas and the process of slowly learning has been fun...I put about an hour and a half in tonight but I am exhausted (not from the guitar but from getting up at 4 in the morning for work)...may not have learned much but I am having a blast.

REMINDER TO EVERYONE: The New Kurt Cobain Documentary comes out this weekend in many markets so check your local movie listing to see showtimes, it is supposed to be amazing. Here in San Diego it is playing at the Ken Cinema Starting tomorrow for One-Week Only!

Early reports are that Mike Huckabee (Bad Idea Party) and Barack Obama (No Idea Party) have won their respective caucuses in the great state of Iowa. Apparently Iowa Hearts Huckabees...sorry I couldn't resist. Nice job to MSNBC for their coverage this evening which has been superb...their whole marketing campaign against Fox News should be "Hey we don't have any blowhards over here...check us out" On a serious note...if the election came down to the two of these guys and you have any sense of logic or intelligence you would vote for Obama. Of course Huckabee would have the Jesus vote in his corner which automatically negates logic coming into the equation. I mean seriously...when you go down the list of bloody organized corrupt organizations currently afloat in the world the list should begin and end with the Evangelicals.

Anyone else happy to see that Jackass Rudy Giuliani implode? I sure am.

Happy to see my Chicago Bulls playing better basketball now that Scott Skiles has rejoined his rightful position as the prime test-tube adult at the Hair-Club for Men Factory. Interim Coach Boylan has done a nice job and actually set a rotation so players know what to expect. Kudos for bringing Ben Gordon off the bench again Jimmy.

I am checking out legendary punk band the Circle Jerks this Saturday at the House of Blues in Downtown San Diego. Frontman Keith Morris has one of the truly great voices in the history of the genre and their shows are always a blast. More importantly the opening band is Black President (who I have not seen live yet) featuring one of my favorite personalities in music Charlie Paulson who is also a guitarist for ska/punk band Goldfinger. Black President's raw, live energy sound from their recordings has me especially excited to see them. Guitarist Greg Hetson will be pulling double duty as he is a guitarist for both bands...he of course also is a guitarist for the greatest punk band of all-time Bad Religion...now that's talent.

I will also be getting out to the driving range this Saturday morning (for the second week in a row) as I try to reclaim my rightful spot as "The greatest golfer in the history of the world in my mind on every Saturday Morning"...ask Chowder as he watched me effortlessly hit the Orange target at the range last weekend on my fifth shot.

Finally, I would like to thank my friends for all the great times during the past year. Many of you were at Casa De Rambler on New Year's Eve, which was a top notch fiasco. To all my friends across this great land of ours I wish you nothing but the best over the next year.
